Cuba defeated Guatemala 2-1 on Wednesday in a North, Central America and Caribbean region 2010 FIFA World Cup™ qualifier, denting Guatemala's hopes of advancing to the final round of regional qualifying. Jaime Colome opened the scoring for Cuba, converting a penalty in the 45th minute.

After Marcos Pappa pulled Guatemala level in the 80th, Alianni Urguelles headed home the winning goal in the 86th minute for the hosts, who claimed their first points of the semi-final round of qualifying.

The defeat left Guatemala with five points with one game remaining, away to the United States. They are chasing Trinidad and Tobago for the second berth in the six-nation final round of qualifying from Group 1. Trinidad and Tobago beat the already-qualified Americans 2-1 on Wednesday.
